Youth Programs

For Divers 18 and under  |  Coach Robert Raley

Developmental Program

The curriculum introduces the basic skills of diving on both our dry-land equipment and in the water and focuses on the start to a healthy knowledge of the sport. Developmental program practices run for 1.5 hours, 4:00-5:30. Developmental program divers are eligible to participate in HDA hosted meets only. This group is for divers new to the sport or those that wish to dive recreational only.

Silver Program

The curriculum introduces the basic skills of diving on both our dry-land equipment and in the water and focuses on the start to a healthy knowledge of the sport. Silver program practices run for 2 hours 15 minutes. (Note: Weekday practices in the Silver program are from 4:00-6:15 p.m.) Silver program divers are eligible to participate in skills exhibitions, Olympic Rings, Champions and Alabama invitational meets only. As they progress, proper steps will be taken to give the diver access to meets at their caliber. This group is for divers new to the sport or divers currently working on their 5 voluntary dives (a dive in each direction) or those that wish to dive recreational only.

Gold Program

The purpose of the Gold Program is to develop and refine the skills needed to be competitive at a high level. This group is primarily made of divers who have recently graduated from the Silver program and divers with previous related experience. Each Gold practice is a 3 hour practice except weekend days or otherwise announced. The first hour will be primarily dry land and lecture oriented. Followed by two consecutive hours of diving. Divers in this group are expected to attend all home invitationals and are strongly encouraged to attend appropriate away meets as designated by the coaching staff.

Gold Team are divers that have a dive in each direction, will be expected to practice each dive in each direction at least once a week and have the option and will be eligible to compete as a member of our travel dive team in FINA (both AAU and USA Diving*) age group meets, Regional, National and Invitational meets as well as high school meets.

*Participation in USA Diving meets require membership as a diver with USA Diving. Cost varies at level of participation.

Junior diving at a national level is our goal when participating in the Gold program meaning FINA events along with some AAU events. Junior diving is generally 18 and under, but does include the summer of competition immediately after high school graduation regardless of age (up to the date the diver turns 19).

A diver’s competitive age is determined by the diver’s age on December 31 of that year. For example, if a diver turns 14 on December 10, 2021, that diver must compete in the 14-15 age-group for the entire 2021 season starting January 1. The age-groups are:

  • 16-18 (A)

  • 14-15 (B)

  • 12-13 (C)

  • 11-Under (D)

  • 9-Under (E)

Within each age-group there are the FINA age-groups, Intermediate and Novice designations. The Intermediate and Novice designations are limited to invitational meet formats and not eligible for national qualification, but rather to afford beginners an opportunity to compete. Only FINA categories are included in national meets and national qualifying meets.

Throughout the year an additional goal for HDA is to work in concert with other seasons of Springboard Diving (Summer Rec league and High School Season) to propel our area divers to excel in the sport in general. With this in mind some dive clinics and meets will be hosted by HDA with every attempt not to be in conflict rather to enhance the opportunities and training in the sport of Springboard Diving.

We believe in setting the example of maintaining an active healthy lifestyle will provide lasting encouragement to our youth to stay fit and healthy. AAU membership is required.
